The End of an Era

As you can see this is the flour can our family has used probably since shortly after we became a family. It has followed us on our journey through life. I remember as a girl my mom had 2 cans like this one was for flour and one was for sugar. I think one was slightly larger and blue though. They sat in the corner of the kitchen between the fridge and the cupboard where she kept her china. There was always a Union Pacific Calendar on the wall above them.  It always had beautiful scenic color pictures. This particular can is the same one that was where Marjorie got the flour when I took that favorite of all time picture. She was two and there was flour all over the kitchen floor. This is also the same can the flour came out of when Marjorie and Curtis threw flour all over the garage in Camarillo. I had to go to a scout meeting and Jeff cleaned it up. I am sure there is still flour on the rafter of that garage.
When we lived on Via Bahia, it was in the garage under the dart board. It has several holes on the edge of the lid. This flour can has served our family well. It has been a tithing blessing.
When I opened it to make bread this holiday season, there were bugs in it for the first time ever. We got rid of the can and will have to find something small to replace it. We don't need this big can now that the nest is empty

Quilts this Christmas

Last September, after our train trip to the quilt show in San Diego, I decided I should get out the quilt top I started 7 or 8 years ago.  I should have it quilted. I took it to Lillian Lee in Laguna Hills to be machine quilted. She did a leaf pattern. It is beautiful. I did the binding around the edges. I gave it to Jeff for Christmas. The picture was taken Christmas morning.

These little quilts I made for Aaron and Sean. I had the fabric for the Cars quilt. I was lucky enough, with the help of a lady at Joann's on sale day, to find the matching flannel for the Toy Story quilt. I think they turned out cute If I do say so myself.

I still have Kourtney's bed quilt and will send it soon. Scot will send pictures for another post of that.

Favorite pictures from the quick trip over Labor Day

We made a quick trip to Utah over the Labor Day weekend. Shirl and ElDora were coming from Roseville, CA to visit Mom. We made the trip too. It turned out very well. Jeff and Shirl were able to have a nice visit. We had dinner together as a family too. Jeff and I were able to stay with Uncle Mark, Mama's brother, in American Fork. It still feels like Alpine to me. It was so good to connect with all the family on this trip. I even learned a few things about my mom that I didn't know before.

We were also able to spend a bit of time with Alex and the boys. They are growing so fast. The part I loved best was when Sean asked Aaron to write something for him on the toy. Aaron didn't know how and told Sean, "Can Grandma help you?" Grandma was more than happy to help. I also loved it when Sean told me my hair smelled nice.

We had a nice dinner at Marjorie's apartment on Sunday afternoon with Hawaiian Haystacks. They were yummy and Dad loved them. Alex and the boys came along with Gloria and her family.
Monday we stopped at the Purple Turtle on the way out of town and saw Steven. He invited us to come up to the Paiute Trail Family Campout October 10-15. That is for another post.
We were afraid of the traffic on the way home from Las Vegas. It was fine and not any trouble at all.
It was a great trip!

The perfect patch and it's done!

When I turned the fabric to make the binding on the edge, you could see the hole. This is the fabric patch to cover the other patch the the hole.

The finished patch
I think it looks great if I do say so myself.

I went on and finished the rest of the binding around the edge.
Now I just want to put a label on it and it will be ready to send.

Patch over the Patch

I didn't like the way the patch looked on the binding. I made a patch and sewed it on over the hole. Now I will just trim down the patch and sew it in the binding.

What Came From Stirring The Pot

Saturday we went on our annual apple trip. We were able to listen to Conference on the Jeep speakers. A swarm of bees hit the windshield right after a talk about bees. We were able to get golden delicious apples. They still had apple dumplings at our favorite little restaurant in Oak Glenn.

The apple this year were expensive and not as good. They were still green in color. The firmness and flavor said they were ready. I started last night and Jeff came straight home from work to help. He was on his way to get a new amp. The one on the sound system died. Jeffrey turns off those apples so well. It goes better and faster when he helps. He has such a talent.

I think bottled fruit is one of the most beautiful sights around!

Patched fussy cut

I used an iron on patch to cover the little V-shaped "fussy cut" I put on the edge of the quilt that will be the binding. I will use fray lock on the other side so it won't fray.
